Scruples Whippet Rescue is an organisation set up to rescue, rehabilitate where necessary, and rehome whippets in need of care and attention by reason of sickness, maltreatment, poor circumstances or ill usage. We will never permit a dog in our care to be put to sleep.*
We also provide a rehoming service for whippets whose owners who can no longer keep their much loved friends due to circumstances beyond their control. This service guarantees that those whippets are placed in safe, loving forever homes.
Rescue: to free or deliver from abuse, misuse or privation.
Rehabilitate: to restore to good health, both physical and mental, and to good condition.
Rehome: to place in a carefully vetted ‘forever’ home.
By ‘whippet’ we mean any dog that looks like a whippet, regardless of the purity of its breeding. Our resources are limited and we are sadly unable to offer practical assistance to greyhounds, lurchers, or any breed other than whippets. However we are willing and able to offer advice regarding any dog in need of help.
Scruples operates throughout England, Wales and Scotland via a network of approved foster carers and volunteers. Scruples does not operate an animal shelter as such, instead whippets in our care enjoy all the comforts of a family home whilst being rehabilitated and/or awaiting rehoming.
Before rehoming most entire adult whippets will be neutered at Scruples expense. Animals considered too young for neutering on the date they are rehomed will only be released for rehoming on condition that they are neutered at an appropriate time. It may be that a whippet is too old or suffers from a health defect which renders them unable to undergo the risk associated with surgery, in which case they will be kept entire under safe control of their new owner.
Every Scruples whippet will be microchipped and vaccinated before rehoming. Microchips carry a unique identification number ensuring that Scruples’ whippets can easily be matched against name and contact information. This practice will guarantee that whippets rehomed by Scruples remain traceable and should they stray can quickly be reunited with the people who have rehomed them.
Anyone rehoming a Scruples whippet will be required to submit to a home check and to sign a contract outlining what Scruples Whippet Rescue expects of them and what they can expect of Scruples. A copy of the contract can be seen below. We will remain available to offer advice and support to the custodians of Scruples’ whippets throughout their whippet’s life or, should it prove necessary, until their whippet is returned to Scruples care.
It is also expected that new owners will make a donation to Scruples Whippet Rescue, both to demonstrate good faith and to aid us in our efforts to ensure that no whippet in need of rescue remains without help.
In addition to our primary rescue and rehoming work Scruples also actively fundraises and may in future have Scruples’ merchandise for sale. All monies raised from donations and sponsorship, and all profits from fundraising activities, go toward either the care of Scruples’ whippets (paying for veterinary fees, for example) or toward Scruples’ operating costs. Scruples trustees, foster carers and volunteers are unpaid, they give their time freely and may only claim reimbursement for payments made on Scruples’ behalf.
The trustees are Jane Wood, Sharon Moss, and Julie West. We also have an excellent team of volunteers behind us who put so much work into Scruples on a daily basis.
